PGA Championship 2022: Ryder Cupper English WDs from Southern Hills

News

Harris English pulled out of the PGA Championship on Friday.

English, coming off a career year in 2021 capped by a Ryder Cup appearance, has been sidelined for most of the 2022 campaign after undergoing hip surgery in February. Though his rehabilitation kept him out of the Masters, English was hopeful during a press conference at the Travelers Championship last week that he would be able to tee it up at Southern Hills.

““I had a torn labrum in my hip for about 10 years, so I had that fixed,” English said. “I’m hopeful that once I’m back that I will be able to compete like I did over the last year before the surgery.”

Conversely, English told the Associated Press last week that while his sabbatical hasn’t been easy he’s also focused on his future. “It sucked to miss the Masters and Match Play and tournaments I really like,” English told the AP. “But I was looking at the next eight to 10 years of having a chance to compete and win golf tournaments.”

English, 32, finished T-64 at last year’s PGA at Kiawah Island.

English is replaced in the field by Kramer Hickok, who will be making his PGA Championship debut. In a bit of irony it was Hickok who fell to English in last year’s epic eight-hole playoff at the Travelers Championship.

With Hickok in the field Charl Schwartzel is now the first alternate.
